Wankhede stadium: The Competition Proposal, Mumbai

A limited design competition proposal for the Mumbai Cricket Association.

The stadium is located amidst the 1940s artdeco buildings along Marine Drive, Bombay. The design proposal to reconstruct, expand and upgrade it draws its inspiration from this art-deco context, which it combines with high-tech systems for large spaces and suspended structures. The clock tower symbolizes the central theme of its architectural expression and establishes it as a landmark in the neighbourhood. Under the tower are spaces for club members, guests and players.

The other defining aspect of the stadium design was the need for systems to support larger audiences of up to 50,000 – it has a 35,000-capacity today – and for facilities to house active outdoor sports.

Client: Mumbai Cricket Association. Area: 60,000 sq. mt.
